This project was our final project in second year. The aim of the project was to design a catalogue for a fictional exhibition which was to be held in The National Gallery in Dublin. The exhibtion was to be based off an essay we wrote in our Critical and Contextual Studies earlier in the year. The essay I choose to base my exhibtion on was an essay which looked at subcultures in the punk scene. The essay focused on the idea that the punk sub cultures in the 70s and 80s had gone from being substance over style to modern day punk sub cultures being very much the opposite. Style over substance. This inspired the title of the exhibtion which was quoted from a H20 song 'What Happened?'.
It was my intent to make each chapter of the catalogue somewhat resemble the style of the subculture at the time, while keeping the general layout and typography consistent. I used scans of safety pins and photocopies of ripped, layered paper to create a punk fan-zine style for the first chapter of the catalogue which focused on beginning of the punk culture, moving onto large, bold lettering for the Hardcore chapter which was slashed, eventually progressing onto a cleaner, brighter style for the finishing, Emo chapter.
